On November 3, 2012, a friend contacted me, informing
me about a person who has on his farm in the village of
Papelón Guanare Edo, a horse that he loves very much
with a lesion on a leg that is well known on the plain as
"sores" or summer sores "; Without further comment, I
told him to call me.
When talking to the owner he describes the injury and
then he sends me a picture of the affected leg to the
phone, seeing these characteristics was in the presence
of a Habronema or cutaneous habronemiasis.
Cutaneous habronemiasis is no more than a
granulomatous and ulcerative dermatitis caused by
nematodes of the genus Habronema.
Some flies (Musca domestica and Stomoxys calcitrans)
deposit Habronema larvae on the horse skin, mainly in
moist areas and wounds, which migrate towards the
interior of the skin causing irritation and formation of
disorganized granulation tissue with some aspect of
cauliflower, difficult to heal, the disease appears mainly
in summer.
Injury in the left forelimb medial aspect.
The owner notes that he had made several recommendations of Veterinary Doctors and none of them worked, without more talking we agreed to go see the horse.
When I arrived at the site to see the horse, I observe that it is not only the Habronema that presents, but also an abscess in the chest, due to the poor application of an intramuscular medication, causing an inflammation of the entire left anterior limb that drained on the inner side of it.
Once I value the horse, I tell the owner that I will reassure him to do the surgical removal of all the granulation tissue of the lesion; Immediately the owner a little scared asks me if it is not dangerous, that if there is no other way to do it. I manage to calm him by explaining a bit about the procedure; I proceed to reassure the horse with Rompum I wait 5 minutes to begin to reflect the effects of tranquilizer, I proceed to do the surgical extirpation.
In the points of a lot of bleeding, I performed cauterization with a soldering iron, I sell The affected area was administered intravenously with Cyclokapron, an antihaemorrhagic drug to avoid profuse bleeding.
I protect the bandage made so that it does not get dirty, I do drainage and cleaning of the abscess once drained place within it 5 ml of Nitrofurazone.
I administer via intramuscular one bottle of Pencivet antibiotic based on Penicillin indicated to apply it every 24 hours for 5 days.
Flumixin Meglumine as an anti-inflammatory intravenous administration every 24 hours for 3 days, administration of a dose of Doramectin dewormer and the change of self-adhesive bandages every 3 days. To be carried out by personal farm workers after explanation of each maneuver in the case of not being able to do it personally for reasons of time
The first change of bandage everything under control and the abscess responding to drains and antibiotics.
For the three change of bandage, I could not be present, for that reason I call the owner to be aware; to which he replies that something unexpected happened and describes a terrible panorama. They pressed the bandage very hard producing inflammation, apart the horse left his corral and went straight to an estuary of a paddock passing half a day with the wet bandage and 2 days tight bandage. Listening to this I told them to remove bandages immediately send me the photo; wash the keys with blue soap and tomorrow I am there.
At nightfall, still thinking about the patient and solving this situation, I came to my mind the name of a character well known in the horse world, with ample experience.
Which I had the opportunity to meet in Caracas Dr. Carlos Federico Rodríguez Garanton. Without thinking anything else, I sent a message through a social network that needed your help, as it was late at night wait for the next day, to which Dr. Carlos Federico Rodríguez Garanton replied with his mobile phone number to call him
I immediately called and attended to me cordially greeted, I describe what happened and without waiting a lot I said take note of what you do: shave the area, administer intramuscularly a single dose of Vetalog, administered intramuscularly 1 single dose of Duramec ADE Lab. Silvestri "excellent product" based on Ivermectin, washing the area with soap Asuntol, dry, apply absorbent dressing (sanitary napkins or modems) fix it to the area that does not move, place self-adhesive bandage Coban; said bandage change and washing must be done every 2 days. Finished these indications he told me to call when you are in front of the horse and we said goodbye.
Very early on Monday, I went out to find some items that I needed to start treatment, in the afternoon, I called Dr. Carlos Federico Rodríguez Garanton, to which we let the horse lay his hands on his forehead and head of it, we began to pray for the health of the horse via telephone, the horse relaxed a lot we finished talking and hands to work to start the treatment.
First change of bandage with the indicated treatment".
To avoid mistakes, I dedicated myself to wash and change bandages personally.
Progressively it evolved little by little, after each wash and change of bandage.
Nowadays, the treatment of this patient has been completed with an experience and learning more in my profession;
I hope it serves as an aid to anyone who may be interested.
Thank God for allowing this horse to heal and Dr. Carlos Federico Rodríguez Garanton, for his remote advice without pettiness; May God continue to give wisdom and knowledge to be transmitted to whoever wants to learn.
For people who say in the plains of the Portuguese Edo that this pathology is not cured "that it is better to swallow the savannah", know that it is cured, call me I can help you.
